
PHILADELPHIA– August 29, 2007 – The
Philadelphia Stock Exchange celebrated the announcement of the upcoming
move of the nation’s oldest Civil War and Underground Railroad
Museum to a new location a with a special bell ringing ceremony
today Wednesday, August 29.
E. Harris Baum, Esq., chairman of the Board of Governors of the
Civil War and Underground Railroad Museum of Philadelphia, will
ring the opening bell. Millicent Sparks, the associate director
of education and programs, will be in costume as Harriet Tubman,
and Herbert Kaufman will be dressed as an authentic style Union
Medical Officer.
The Civil War and Underground Railroad Museum was founded in 1888
by veteran Union Army, Navy and Marine Corps officers to preserve
the history of that conflict and to promote public education through
the collection, preservation and display of artifacts, written material
and photographic documents.
The museum plans to move into the historic First Bank of the United
States building at 120 S. 3rd Street by 2010. That building dates
back to 1797 and was constructed under the direction of Alexander
Hamilton. The museum is currently located at 1805 Pine Street, a
residential area, where they have resided since 1922.
