PHILADELPHIA – June 14, 2007 –
The Philadelphia Stock Exchange helped usher in Father’s Day
with a special bell ringing ceremony today, Thursday, June 14, to
promote Big Brothers Big Sisters’ need for more male mentors.
Marlene L. Olshan, chief executive officer of Big Brothers Big
Sisters Southeastern PA (BBBS SEPA), one of the largest Big Brothers
Big Sisters affiliates in the U.S. and the largest in the state,
made opening remarks. BBBS SEPA now serves 2900 children with an
annual budget approaching $4 million dollars.
Big Brother Spencer Wright and his 8-year-old “little brother”
Dashawn shared their story.
The mission of the organization is to improve the lives of children
and strengthen communities through professionally supported, one-to-one
mentoring relationships.
More than 100,000 children in Delaware, Chester and Philadelphia
counties face risk factors that threaten their ability to become
healthy and productive adults. With nearly 1,000 boys waiting for
Big Brothers, BBBS needs more men to become mentors. BBBS mentoring
is proven to positively change the lives of these children and their
communities.
