PHILADELPHIA – May 9, 2005 – The Philadelphia Stock Exchange (PHLX) announced today that it has entered into a long-term agreement with Standard & Poor’s to launch options on Select Sector SPDRs [Standard & Poor's Depositary Receipts Trusts] and S&P iShares Exchange Traded Funds [ETF]. Select Sector SPDRs cover U.S. equities; S&P iShares cover global equities with stand-alone regional ETFs of Europe, Latin America and Japan.

Options on Select Sector SPDRs and iShares ETFs will trade on PHLX XL, the Exchange’s electronic trading platform, along with 21 other PHLX proprietary indexes and 1,650 equity options.

“PHLX is excited to partner with S&P to bring a new range of risk management and trading instruments to the global investing and trading community,” said PHLX vice president of new products, Daniel Carrigan. “PHLX customers can position trades on U.S. equities against Europe or Latin America. Additionally, Super Sector plays are possible via SPDR options on U.S. healthcare equities versus options on global healthcare,” added Carrigan.

“Sectors continue to grow in importance for investors,” says David Blitzer, managing director and chairman of the index committee at Standard & Poor’s. “Providing options on the Select Sector SPDR gives investors a new way to manage sector risk and take advantage of opportunities.”
